We use this term to describe the assessment of the skills that are important for sales development reps (SDRs), a term that is also applied to inside salespeople, business development executives (BDEs and BDMs), and telesales people. These days many salespeople operate remotely and visit customers virtually. These terms - SDR, BDE, BDM, and Telesales staff are used for those salespeople who establish the initial contact with potential customers and usually then pass on the task to others in their sales team.
